Nearby Gisborne (40 minutes easy driving) offers fine dining, one of the best bookshops in New Zealand, a museum and a display of contemporary Maori art (available for purchase) at Tairawhiti Polytechnicís Toihoukura Gallery. Horse Treks are available locally. In January place a bet on the beach races.


Local shops provide for basic needs including petrol and liquor. The fish and chips shop by the bridge lays claim to being the best in the country!
